Noise-Induced Hearing Loss (NIHL) Symptoms
Symptoms of NIHL include:
- Difficulty hearing speech
- Ringing or buzzing in the ears (tinnitus)
- Muffled or distorted hearing
- Increased sensitivity to loud sounds
It goes without saying that early detection of hearing loss is essential in our efforts to prevent further damage and implement effective interventions.
NIHL Causes
Industrial hearing loss is typically caused by prolonged exposure to loud noise levels exceeding 85 decibels (dB). Common sources of occupational noise include:
- Machinery
- Power tools including medical equipment
- Heavy equipment
- Industrial processes
- Musical instruments
Additionally, exposure to ototoxic chemicals or traumatic noise events (such as explosions) can worsen hearing damage in industrial environments.
NIHL Diagnosis
Our Industrial Hearing Tests include a comprehensive evaluation of your hearing function. Using specialized equipment and following standardized protocols, we conduct audiometric testing to assess your hearing thresholds at different frequencies and determine the extent of hearing loss.
We also provide baseline audiograms for new employees and conduct regular monitoring to track changes in hearing status over time. Full examinations include earwax removal, assessment of middle ear status, and speech understanding in noisy conditions, as all may affect performance on the job.
Protection from NIHL
To lower the risk of occupational hearing loss, we offer personalized hearing protection solutions, tailored to your specific work environment and noise exposure levels. These may include:
- Custom-fitted earplugs
- Earmuffs
- Noise-canceling headphones designed to attenuate harmful noise while allowing you to communicate effectively and maintain situational awareness
We also provide education and training on proper hearing protection usage and encourage regular hearing screenings to monitor your hearing health.
