Balance Disorder Symptoms
Many symptoms can indicate balance disorders:
- Vertigo (a sensation of spinning or whirling)
- Dizziness
- Lightheadedness
- Unsteadiness
- Difficulty maintaining posture or walking.
You may also experience nausea, blurred vision, or disorientation during episodes of imbalance.
Balance Disorder Causes
Balance issues can originate from a wide range of underlying factors:
- Inner ear problems (such as Meniere’s disease or benign paroxysmal positional vertigo)
- Vestibular nerve inflammation
- Head injuries
- Infections
- Medication side effects
- Neurological conditions
Only after we identify the main cause of your balance disorder do we work on a customized and effective treatment plan.
Balance Disorder Diagnosis
We begin with a complete evaluation of your medical history and a comprehensive examination of your balance and vestibular function.
Tests to assess the integrity of your inner ear and vestibular system may be conducted:
- Videonystagmography (VNG)
- Vestibular-evoked myogenic potentials (VEMP)
- Video Head Impulse Test (vHIT) and Vestibular screening text
- Hearing assessment (part of your inner ear)
Balance Disorder Treatment
Once diagnosis is complete, we work closely with you to put together a treatment plan fully tailored to your specific needs.
This may include:
- Vestibular rehabilitation therapy (VRT) exercises to improve balance and reduce symptoms
- Dietary and lifestyle modifications
- Medication management
Our goal is to restore your balance function and improve your overall well-being.
